BLADES OF GRASS

I am just one blade of grass
Growing in society’s lawn
Imperfect
Occupying an imperfect space
With billions of other blades

I’ve been fed a lifetime of nutrients
Survived pesticides that weakened me
At times, withstood harsh elements
Torrential rains, snowstorms, the cold and drought
But I’ve survived to come back year after year

I’ve outlasted the pesky crabgrass
Watched the weeds plucked from beside me
Overcame insects that crawled around and over me
Watched those beside me, eaten from beneath the ground
And lived to watch another seed grow

We all are just blades of grass
Growing in society’s lawn
Imperfect
Surviving in an imperfect space
I am just one of those blades of grass
